Everything You Should Know About the PE Structural Exam
The PE Structural Lateral Forces and Vertical Forces exams test for competency within civil and structural engineering. They are designed for engineers who have passed their FE exam and gained a minimum of four years of engineering experience. These two exams are one of the last steps before earning your professional structural engineering license.
Prerequisites
Before you are allowed to take the PE Structural exams, you will need to meet several requirements specified by NCEES. Because states’ requirements all vary, we suggest checking with your state board.
Exam Fees
The cost of the PE Structural exams vary by state. Please check this map to see exam-specific information, requirements, and fees.
Exam Day
These exams are in a pencil-and-paper format, are both 8 hours long, and are made up of multiple-choice questions. They are open-book exams, which means you are allowed to bring bound reference materials to the exam.
After the Exam
Pencil-and-paper exam results are generally released to the licensing boards 10-12 weeks after you take your exam. Depending on your state, you will either be notified with your exam results online through your NCEES account or with a letter from your state board.
